Joey Barton charged over betting on 44 football matches
Rangers midfielder Joey Barton has been charged by the SFA for allegedly placing bets on 44 football matches.
The veteran midfielder, who is currently serving a three-week suspension, is alleged to have broken the governing body’s rules zero-tolerance policy on wagers on any football games.
The SFA judicial protocol forbids players from betting on any football match, anywhere in the world. The English FA introduced a similar blanket ban on gambling on football in 2014.
It’s believed that all 44 counts of betting occurred between July 1st and September 15th after Barton signed for the Ibrox club following his release from Burnley – with one of the matches being Celtic’s 7-0 Champions League defeat against Barcelona.
Barton has a week to respond to the charges, with a hearing set for October 27th.
