Warburton resigns amid confusion as Rangers boss
Rangers has accepted the resignation of Mark Warburton as manager amid a backdrop of behind-the-scenes chaos.
The club released a statement on Friday evening confirming the resignations of the manager, his assistant and former Gers defender David Weir and Head of Recruitment Frank McParland.
Yet both Sky Sports and the BBC reported that Warburton had denied stepping down and was unaware of the club’s statement.
The Telegraph, however, report that Warburton’s agent notified the club of his intention to resign as manager on Monday following an approach from English Championship outfit Nottingham Forest.
The board convened on Wednesday and, following a lengthy discussion, accepted Warburton’s wish.
However, upon being notified by Nottingham Forest that they were no longer interested in bringing the trio the City Ground, his agent, Dave Lockwood, approached the club on Friday and asked the club to reverse their decision, a route they refused to take.
Rangers, it’s reported, will shell out £500,000 to the trio in contractual commitments, which is a far cry from the £1.2 million that would be required in compensation if all three were to be removed from their respective positions.
U20’s coach Graeme Murty has taken temporary charge and was on the touchline for Sunday’s 2-1 win over Greenock Morton in the fifth round of the Scottish Cup.
