# Rangers must make additions or they’ll fall short in title race

The transfer window is [now closed](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/48965845) for the Premier League and Championship, but the SPFL teams have [three more weeks](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/48491696) to try and strengthen their squads.

Rangers in that time will have to do some [serious work](https://www.footballscotland.co.uk/spfl/scottish-premiership/positions-rangers-need-target-stop-16275533) to their squad – or they could [miss out](https://www.footballscotland.co.uk/spfl/scottish-premiership/positions-rangers-need-target-stop-16275533) on the title once again.

One player they [must replace](https://www.hitc.com/en-gb/2019/07/29/rangers-have-plenty-of-time-to-find-a-ryan-kent-replacement/) from last year is Ryan Kent – who was a [massive influence](https://www.liverpoolfc.com/news/first-team/349228-ryan-kent-named-young-player-of-the-year) for the whole of last season.

He may well have only [scored six goals](https://www.liverpoolfc.com/news/first-team/349228-ryan-kent-named-young-player-of-the-year) and provided four assists, but his [driving energy](https://www.90min.com/posts/6410083-ryan-kent-5-things-to-know-about-liverpool-star-wanted-by-rangers-boss-steven-gerrard) was crucial in so many games for the Gers.

Joe Aribo has arrived – and he has [undoubted quality](https://www.footballscotland.co.uk/spfl/scottish-premiership/rangers-physical-attributes-joe-aribo-16473309) and also has [good energy,](https://www.footballscotland.co.uk/spfl/scottish-premiership/rangers-physical-attributes-joe-aribo-16473309)but Kent’s influence could still be missed.

Several [other wingers](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/glasgow-rangers/transfers/verein/124) have arrived at Ibrox including [Jordan Jones](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/glasgow-rangers/transfers/verein/124) and [Sheyi Ojo](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/glasgow-rangers/transfers/verein/124) but many Rangers fans are [not convinced](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/scottish-premier/rangers-fans-react-on-twitter-to-steven-gerrards-comments-regarding-ryan-kent/) that these two can replace Kent.

Steven Gerrard has said that the Gers are [actively looking](https://twitter.com/RangersFC/status/1159177390301622272) for new players – and now that the window in England’s top leagues has shut, he thinks he has more chance of getting [some deals done](https://twitter.com/RangersFC/status/1159177390301622272).

One position that will need strengthening is left-back – as they currently only have [Borna Barsic](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/glasgow-rangers/kader/verein/124) who can play there.

Certainly, a lot of Gers fans want Gerrard to sign [another left-back](https://twitter.com/RangersFC/status/1159177390301622272) in the remaining weeks of the transfer window.

Upfront Rangers have two quality strikers in [Jermain Defoe](https://www.sundaypost.com/fp/big-interview-exclusive-rod-wallace-reckons-jermain-defoe-can-be-rangers-top-striker-and-fire-them-to-his-first-title/) and [Alfredo Morelos](https://www.newstatesman.com/politics/sport/2019/04/football-theatre-and-rangers-striker-alfredo-morelos-box-office-attraction), but Defoe is 36 now – and may not be able to play many games.

They let [Kyle Lafferty go](https://rangers.co.uk/news/headlines/kyle-lafferty-2/) who was always a [decent backup striker](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/kyle-lafferty/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/36884) – so they could do with someone to support Morelos and Defoe.

Gerrard has so far added [nine players](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/glasgow-rangers/transfers/verein/124) to his squad – and his team [is better](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/glasgow-rangers/kader/verein/124) than [last year](https://www.worldfootball.net/teams/rangers-fc/2019/2/), but if they want to compete with Celtic, he will have to do a bit more business in the coming weeks.
