After three draws in their last four league games, a crucial spark appears absent from Danny Rohl’s Rangers starting 11.
Rohl’s team drew 2-2 with rivals Celtic at the weekend, drawing 2-2 after a scintillating 2-0 performance in the first half.
The Gers have also drawn with Motherwell and Livingston away from home in recent weeks, showcasing a lack of steel.
The frontmen have also lacked decisive edge in recent weeks, despite Youssef Chermiti’s goalscoring clinic at the weekend.
Rohl’s teams are defined by their tactical flexibility and high energy, often shifting between 4-2-2-2 and 4-2-3-1 formations.
With that being said, let’s look at three Rangers players from the past who could help Rohl’s team now.
Steven Davis
One of the biggest criticisms of Rangers’ midfield this season is its inability to slow the game down and keep possession.
When they went 2-0 up against Celtic, the Gers lacked a player who could slow the tempo down and calm everyone’s nerves.
A Steven Davis in midfield would be the ‘brains’ to the operation in Rohl’s midfield, sitting alongside Nicolas Raskin.
The Northern Irish legend would ensure that nothing is desperate and can offer that creative flexibility to help Rangers score another goal.
Davis would be the perfect player for the current system, but he isn’t the only midfield star who could help Rohl.
Barry Ferguson
While Rangers possess plenty of talent in their ranks, the Bears are missing more leaders on the pitch when they are winning.
James Tavenier is an excellent leader for the Gers, but a Barry Ferguson in midfield would get everyone in line.
Ferguson would be a standard setter in the dressing room at Ibrox, bringing that fiery mentality to ensure everyone is up to scratch for intense fixtures.
The former captain won five Scottish Premiership titles, five Scottish Cups, and was part of the Gers team that reached the UEFA Cup final in 2008.
He knows how to perform at a club like Rangers, and he would be perfect to help them give themselves a chance at silverware.
Alfredo Morelos
Though controversial, the Colombian striker Alfredo Morelos always played with his heart on his sleeve during his time at Rangers.
Morelos brings that fiery South American aggression and was a master at pinning players down in his heyday.
A 2019 version of Morelos would occupy both central defenders, allowing Mikey Moore and Skov Olsen to work in the half space.
Morelos’ pressing and physicality would allow Rohl’s men to breathe and retain possession higher up the pitch.
It wouldn’t just be that, Morelos was an elite goalscorer for Rangers.
He scored 124 goals in 269 games, winning the 2021 Premiership and the 2022 Scottish Cup.
