How Stephen Robinson’s potential exit could affect Rangers on Sunday

Rangers’ opponents, St Mirren, have been dealt a major blow ahead of the game this Sunday at SMiSA Stadium.

Aberdeen have made an approach to recruit St Mirren manager Stephen Robinson as their new boss.

The Buddies have revealed that Aberdeen have met a contractual clause in Robinson’s contract to allow him to speak to the club.

Aberdeen have been without a full-time manager since early January, following Jimmy Thelin’s sacking.

Stephen Robinson has transformed St Mirren in recent seasons, securing three top-six league finishes in a row.

He’s led the club to European football for the first time since 1987 and won the Premier Sports Cup in December.

If Robinson isn’t in the dugout on Sunday, what could that mean for the Gers who bid to bolster their title hopes?

A disaster time to face Rangers

Although they reached the Scottish Cup semi-final last weekend, their Premiership form has been terrible in recent weeks.

In the league, they sit 10th, recently losing 5-0 to Motherwell and 2-1 to Dundee United.

Even under Robinson’s guidance, form hasn’t been great, but, potentially without his familiarity, Rangers must smell blood.

Given the quality and potential managerial mismatch, Rohl’s team should be able to field a team far superior to St Mirren on Sunday.

A manager lost amid a battle at the bottom is the worst possible situation for the Buddies.

Tactical uncertainty without Stephen Robinson

Stephen Robinson has built a reputation for setting up his team masterfully for games against Rangers and Celtic.

He’s often utilized a 3-5-2 or 5-4-1, which often frustrates the two Glasgow teams considerably.

However, without Robinson’s tactical influence on Sunday, Rangers have all the tools to exploit a disorganised St Mirren team.

The Buddies have shipped 45 goals this season, giving Youssef Chermiti a real sense of motivation to deliver at the weekend.

If St Mirren set up in either of those formations, Danny Rohl will have to counter with a 4-2-3-1.

If Thelo Aasgaard starts, he could be the key player to operate in the pocket between St Mirren’s resolute midfield and defence.

Rangers are dying for a player to bridge the gap between midfield and attack, and this weekend could be perfect to use it.

A disjointed and disorganised St Mirren is the perfect contest for Rangers to get their season back on track.

Will they exploit the Buddies on Sunday, or is it a banana skin waiting to happen?
