- Steven Gerrard once again revisited his Rangers days on The Overlap podcast.
- The 2021 title-winning boss described Alfredo Morelos as tough to manage, but an asset for his team
- In doing so, he described a signing profile that Rangers require in the current team.
In his appearance on The Overlap podcast, Steven Gerrard once again went back down memory lane to recall decisions made during his time at Ibrox.
The former Rangers boss did not disclose any new information or revelations, and once again lamented the lack of funds given to him in the transfer market as well as conceding with hindsight that he probably should have stayed longer before moving to the Premier League.
He spoke in detail about Alfredo Morelos, describing the Colombian as a “maverick” who was “tough to manage”.
Steven Gerrard describes what Rangers need now
The 2021 SPFL Premiership-winning manager admitted that Morelos would get the benefit of a blind eye here and there, despite not always meeting the strict standards that Gerrard imposed.
This happened because Morelos was doing the business on the pitch, particularly during the 2019/20 campaign and the following title breakthrough season.
He would sometimes let Gerrard, the team and supporters down, but that was part of whole package with El Bufalo.
He was a colourful figure, a contradiction, a handful on and off the pitch, but many of his qualities are what Rangers need now.
The team could be doing with another couple of signings that carry the impact that Morelos had.

This was because of what he could do on the pitch, and as Steven Gerrard said, because it was for the greater good of Rangers.
Top managers get the best of the players at their disposal and make things work.
Steven Gerrard knew his Morelos problem was a challenge, but also an asset to his and the team’s advantage.
Just think of the marauding displays in Europe against the likes of Porto, Feyenoord, and Borussia Dortmund, as well as the goals that contributed to the club’s title success in 2021.
That is one of the signing profiles Rangers require in order to progress and prosper on the domestic and European fronts.
