What needs to happen to set up Rangers title win at Celtic Park

  • Rangers have revived their title challenge under Danny Rohl after early-season struggles and a low league position with Russell Martin.
  • Crucial fixtures against Hearts and Celtic could decide whether Rangers stay on course for the Premiership crown.
  • Rangers could potentially clinch the title at Celtic Park in a dramatic run-in scenario.

Rangers title destiny is coming into focus, and Danny Rohl’s remarkable rescue job has carried the Ibrox club to the brink of one of the most dramatic Premiership triumphs in recent memory.

When the German head coach replaced Russell Martin in October, Rangers were marooned in eighth place.

Supporters had witnessed a dismal opening run that had produced only one league win in seven matches.

The title race already looked as though it might disappear over the horizon before autumn had properly begun.

Indeed, bookmakers had already begun to pay out on bets backing Celtic to win the title.

Instead, six months later, Rangers are firmly in contention and entering the decisive stretch with the championship very much within reach.

How early can Rangers win the title?

There is no prospect of the title being secured before the split, and even victory away to Hearts on May 4 would not be enough on its own to crown Rangers champions.

Tynecastle, though, could be the night the balance of power shifts decisively.

If Rangers win in Edinburgh, they will not only strike a major blow against the current leaders but place themselves in prime position heading into the final three matches.

How can Rangers win the title at Celtic Park?

From there, attention turns immediately to Celtic Park on May 10, the earliest realistic date Rangers could clinch the league.

For that to happen, Rohl’s side must arrive there having maintained a perfect run through their next fixtures and defeat Celtic in the derby itself.

They must also rely on Hearts to drop enough points in their own matches to keep the title within Rangers’ control.

If those results align, the Old Firm clash becomes a genuine championship decider.

If they beat Celtic away, Rangers could mathematically secure the Premiership on their rivals’ ground.

Should Rangers win their next three fixtures prior to the Old Firm, they would sit on 75 points.

For Rangers to be able to clinch the title by beating Celtic at Celtic Park, Celtic must be on no more than 71 points before that match.

Therefore, Celtic can take no more than 7 points from their three games for this scenario to happen.

Even then, Rangers would still need Hearts to have dropped enough points elsewhere to make the title mathematically secure.

That means the Old Firm clash could become a championship decider in the most emphatic sense.

Win at Celtic Park, and Rangers may be able to celebrate on their fiercest rivals’ turf for the first time since 1999.

Breaking Hearts against Hibs

If Hearts remain alive in the race beyond that weekend, then the most likely stage for a title party shifts three days later to Ibrox.

Rangers host Hibernian on May 13.

That fixture could well become the night the trophy is finally claimed in front of a home crowd.

But only if Rohl’s side win at Hearts and then at Celtic.

Then they would have one final step.

Beating the Jambos’ Edinburgh rivals in Govan would be the likeliest moment for the title to be sealed.

That possibility would carry a certain symmetry.

Rangers season looked broken when Rohl inherited it in October.

Yet he has rebuilt belief, restored consistency and turned a faltering campaign into one that could climax with silverware in front of a packed Ibrox on a warm summer’s evening.

The equation is simple in football terms.

Win at Tynecastle, win at Celtic Park, and Rangers will place themselves on the verge of completing one of the great turnarounds in Scottish football history.
