With Steven Gerrard tipped to land the Burnley job, his move back into football management could open the Championship door for James Tavernier.
The Rangers club captain will leave Ibrox in the coming weeks and he is likely to have several offers on the table.
If a Burnley offer comes to fruition, it would be very tempting for the 34-year-old, given the location and proximity to his home in Yorkshire.
On Tuesday, Sacha Tavolieri detailed that dialogue has commenced between the Clarets top brass and Steven Gerrard’s representatives.
The message was that the 2021 Scottish title winner is open and interested in the opportunity.
Gerrard needs to emulate Frank Lampard to restore his standing
Unfortunately, that would mean Scott Parker losing his job as Burnley manager as he is still in the role.
The former Fulham boss is stuck in a loop of promotion and relegation with Burnley, seemingly too good for the second tier, but not capable of making an impression among the elite.
The Turf Moor club would be giving up the Parker factor and the ‘security’ that he provides in the Championship, but they must feel that now is the time to move in a different direction.
Realistically, for Gerrard, this would be his last crack at the top level in England – if he gets there.
The Liverpool legend would be out to emulate Frank Lampard, who has stabilised and progressed Coventry City, and will now lead the club into the riches and prestige of the Premier League.
Where will James Tavernier be playing next season?
James Tavernier would be an attractive signing for Steven Gerrard if he does end up at Burnley.
A seasoned campaigner, an older experienced head, a role model for younger players and an excellent attacking threat from right back, Tav still has plenty to offer, even if there is a trade-off with his defensive nous and ageing legs.
Today on Read Rangers, we detailed the interview that Gerrard conducted with Chris Jack, praising the impact of Tavernier at Rangers over the last 11 years.
“He delivered in the end for me” was one of the messages from Gerrard and with that in mind, he would likely be open to reuniting with the 34-year-old.
The Englishman has already been linked with other clubs, including Spurs, in the event that they are relegated, while Wolves are also said to be keen on a deal for the upcoming free agent.
The headlines and details around Tavernier will continue into the coming weeks, but let’s just hope that his Rangers career doesn’t end with a whimper this week.
That will be the case if Rangers don’t win at Hearts, meaning the final three games – and his last at Ibrox – will be very underwhelming games and another case of ‘what if’.
