- Cyriel Dessers has spoken out about his spell at Rangers for the first time
- The forward made over 100 appearances for the Ibrox club in two years
- Dessers left Rangers for Greek club Panathinaikos last September
Former Rangers forward Cyriel Dessers has sat down for his first interview since leaving Ibrox eight months ago.
The 31-year-old left Govan for Greek club Panathinaikos in September last year on an undisclosed fee after scoring 52 goals for the Gers.
Now settled into life in Greece, Dessers spoke to the Rangers Review to discuss all things Rangers.
Dessers believes Rangers need Premiership experience at its core
The Nigerian mentioned that it is important Rangers have “guys who understand the league.
“I think for a team like Rangers to be competing for league titles and trophies, having an experienced core is essential.”
There has been talk of some Rangers players, who as much as they may understand the size and history of the club, they do not get what Scottish football is truly about because they have not played in it.
And they then struggle to get their feet under the table and impress on the pitch.
Winning games is everything at Rangers and Dessers knows that.
The former forward also talked about having the players that can translate the message “Hey, today we cannot drop anything” to the group.
These comments from Dessers reiterates that what Rangers need are experienced league players who every time they walk through the doors at Ibrox, understand that from the get go.
Dessers says what needs to be said regarding certain away games
The 31-year-old also revealed what he believes is required to win the Premiership title in Scotland.
Dessers referred to the need to be “100 per cent every time” but also highlighted an issue that has been an achilles heel of this current Rangers squad.
The forward said that “the real base of winning a league title in Scotland is those difficult away games.”
Two examples of that this season was Rangers’ away trip to Livingston when they had to come back from 2-0 down to draw and the first half of the recent match at Falkirk.
Rangers clearly have a problem when it comes to matches at grounds they are expected to win and it is one that has followed them all season.
That is the harsh reality spelled out by Dessers and one that manager Danny Rohl must find solutions to next season.

The need for experienced players who understand the league and an inability to thrive in certain away matches.
Those are two points that many people would write on Rangers’ report card under the section ‘room for improvement.’
It remains to be seen if the club will take those points on board.
