Rangers transfer red light actually represents progress for squad change

The news that the red light has flashed on Rangers transfer option on Andreas Skov Olsen is a positive signal.

Danny Rohl is intent on a significant squad overhaul and he has been vocal on the need to recruit leaders, as well as others with the requisite quality and minerals to perform under the intense demands at Ibrox.

Club chairman Andrew Cavanagh has also outlined the direction Rangers transfer business will be heading this summer.

All this brings us back to Andreas Skov Olsen and what was widely recognised as a marquee signing back in January.

Major disappointment with Skov Olsen Rangers transfer

Players of his quality and reputation don’t often pitch up in Scotland, but the sad reality is that this version of the player was not the same one that tore it up in Belgium with Club Brugge and held his own in Serie A with Bologna.

The Danish international is a much better player than he has shown in recent months, but with no signs of turning a corner or showing the competitive and technical edge that Rangers require, a permanent deal made no sense.

Wolfsburg were said to have agreed a fee of around £9 million for a permanent move to Ibrox – but the option won’t be taken up

Wolfsburg Bundesliga status at risk

Another point of interest is that the Lower Saxony club is currently halfway through a two-legged playoff to secure their Bundesliga status for 2026/27.

The first leg was 0-0 and now they go to Paderborn on Monday evening.

If Wolfsburg fall through the trap door, Skov Olsen and some others will not want to hang around and the club may be required to cash in, albeit at a lower price.

As things stand, it’s difficult to make the argument to spend £4/5 million on a player who was such a disappointment.

The supposed game-changer turned out to be a major flop.

Whatever is going on with Andreas Skov Olsen, hopefully he can regain his mental and physical peak to demonstrate his ability.

Rangers can’t afford to take that risk on a permanent basis.
