# Rangers rocked by Ben Godfrey injury confirmation – what happens next

**Rangers have been hit with a significant injury setback after it was confirmed Ben Godfrey will be unavailable for four weeks.**

The centre-back picked up a hamstring strain during Friday’s 1-1 Scottish Premiership draw with Dundee United, and you knew as he trundled off the pitch that a layoff was coming.

The situation has now been confirmed [via the Rangers Review](https://www.rangersreview.co.uk/news/26433561.rangers-discover-ben-godfrey-injury-timeline-ibrox-setback/), meaning the one-time England international will definitely miss the trip to Poland to take on Jagiellonia Bialystok on Thursday.

Beyond that, Godfrey will miss further [important European games](https://readrangers.com/2026/08/03/rangers-europa-league-draw-opponents/) as well as the domestic fixtures against Hibs, St. Mirren, and Aberdeen, at least.

## Who replaces Ben Godfrey?

[Olwethu Makhanya](https://readrangers.com/2026/07/30/olwethu-makhanya-rangers-perfect-introduction/) will come in to play on Sunday at Ibrox against Hibs, but before then there is uncertainty if he will be on the plane to eastern Europe.

There are doubts over his Visa to enter Poland rather than any injury issue.

The situation is yet to be clarified, but if the South African is unavailable for selection, Derek McInnes will be left scratching his head.

Rangers are short in defence and need more players, with John Souttar and Clinton Nsiala currently out of the picture, and most likely both heading for the Ibrox exit.

A recall for the French defender seems unlikely but can’t be ruled out just now.

Dujon Sterling is an obvious option to slot in to play at centre-back if required, as long as Ross McCrorie has recovered from the niggle he was carrying.

Tuesday could also be an important day for Rangers with the club still able to register new players to play in the third qualifying round.
