# Should Rangers Sell Manny Fernandez? Ian McCall Makes The Case

**The debate over Manny Fernandez has flared up again after former Clyde and Dundee United manager Ian McCall suggested Rangers should think about cashing in on the Nigeria international.**

[Speaking on Open Goal podcast](https://www.youtube.com/watch?si=_njPlcrbeOSbY06L&v=hHeGvC4IYdU&feature=youtu.be), McCall questioned the defender’s displays during a difficult opening to the new season under Derek McInnes.

It is a pointed intervention. Rangers have failed to win either of their first two matches and are still searching for a first victory since McInnes took charge, and a back line that has looked short of authority has become an easy target for the pundits.

Fernandez is once again at the centre of the conversation, and with justification. McCall was discussing the ease with which Jagiellonia Bialystok cut through Rangers on Thursday.

“I mean, if you get a lot of money for Fernandez, he pondered before puffing out his lips, suggesting that option could be beneficial for Rangers and McInnes.

## The case for selling Manny Fernandez

The argument for moving Fernandez on rests on getting value while the interest is there.

The defender [previously shut down transfer talk](https://readrangers.com/2026/07/17/manny-fernandez-responds-rangers-transfer-interest/), but he still attracts [interest from the continent](https://readrangers.com/2026/06/27/rennes-interest-emmanuel-fernandez-rangers-transfer-test/).

With the window open until September 3, a sale would hand McInnes significant funds to reshape his defence.

The counter-view is just as strong. Selling a talented top-flight defender now, with no replacement lined up, would be a gamble.

Manny Fernandez is needed now, but his performances have been below par.

For now this is one pundit’s opinion rather than a Rangers position, but something has to give.

McInnes is growing restless with elements of Fernandez’s play, and he can perform so much better. A lack of competition for his place seems to be an issue, but he needs to immediately meet the expectations and help the team out of the current slump.

An experienced head playing next to the Nigerian international could be just what is required.
