# James Penrice on verge of Rangers move – loan deal agreed

**James Penrice is set for a Rangers medical on Friday after the Gers agreed a loan deal for the former Hearts left-back.**

Sky Sports and [The Evening Times have reported on the agreement](https://rangersnewsfeed.com/rangers-agree-deal-for-james-penrice-as-transfer-details-revealed/), with the finer details of the move emerging on Thursday night.

The urgency behind the move is not hard to spot.

Tuur Rommens was ruled out for up to eight weeks with a groin problem picked up in the defeat by Hibernian, [one half of the double injury blow confirmed last week](https://readrangers.com/2026/08/11/rangers-confirm-injury-chermiti-rommens/), leaving Derek McInnes without a recognised senior left-back.

The problem was clear during Thursday’s Europa League elimination against Jagiellonia Bialystok.

## Why the James Penrice deal has moved quickly

Rangers’ interest in Penrice is long-standing. He featured in [the club’s push to add three new players earlier this month](https://readrangers.com/2026/08/10/rangers-transfer-news-driouech-nedeljkovic-penrice/), though some reporting suggested talks had been complicated by AEK’s preference for a permanent sale rather than the temporary deal Ibrox wanted.

A loan, if confirmed, would represent a swift resolution to a problem position.

Neither club has made an official announcement yet, so this remains at the reported stage until a medical is passed and everything is concluded.

As we’ve seen with Cohaib Driouech, it’s not done until it’s done.
