# Derek Ferguson questions Rangers’ Bologna approach for son Lewis Ferguson

**Rangers’ long-running interest in Lewis Ferguson has resurfaced, and the sharpest questions are coming from inside the family.**

[Inside Ibrox reports](https://rangersnewsfeed.com/rangers-confirmed-as-approaching-bologna-for-lewis-ferguson-this-summer/) that Derek Ferguson, the former Ibrox midfielder and the player’s father, has questioned the Gers’ decision to approach Bologna about a summer deal for his son, arguing the club must have known the midfielder’s valuation before entering negotiations.

The thrust of the criticism is straightforward. Bologna’s rough asking price for a Serie A midfielder and Scotland international was hardly a secret, so an approach that was never likely to land raises fair questions about how Rangers are spending their time to fill key roles.

## Why the Lewis Ferguson approach is being questioned

Read Rangers set out [the fee, the family ties and the facts behind the Lewis Ferguson links](https://readrangers.com/2026/07/14/lewis-ferguson-rangers-transfer-explained) back in July, and little has changed since. Ferguson remains a Bologna player, with no sign of an exit on the horizon.

“See the thing with Lewis, was that not a waste of time? said Ferguson Snr.

“A waste of time having the conversations because they must have known the price was between 15 and 20 million euros.

“Rangers just can’t go there for a player. So why did they go down that route?”

The context matters. Derek McInnes has added nine players this summer and still has business to do after Thursday’s [Europa League exit to Jagiellonia Bialystok](https://readrangers.com/2026/08/13/rangers-europa-league-jagiellonia-talking-points).

The collapse of the Couhaib Driouech move leaves the squad short of the creativity the manager has openly asked for.

Derek Ferguson is right to critique what was talked about as a marquee deal, but never likely to materialise, and in the absence of Lewis Ferguson moving to Rangers, the club have failed to put a player of that stature and ability in place.
