# League Cup draw means back to back Rangers v Celtic clashes will define September

**Progression in the Scottish League Cup against St Mirren was followed by an Old Firm quarter final draw, meaning back to back Rangers v Celtic clashes once again this season.**

In a situation that reflects last season, [Rangers v Celtic cup showdown](https://readrangers.com/2026/08/16/scottish-league-cup-quarter-final-draw) will unfold on the weekend of September 12/13, before the Old Firm collide in the Scottish Premiership at Parkhead days later on September 20.

It creates a critical juncture point, early in the season that will define September and quite possibly, the months ahead.

Celtic will have a potential Champions League game in the days before the Premier Sports Cup tie, but Rangers prospective Conference League commitments don’t kick off until October.

Another key point is that after the Celtic v Rangers meeting in the east end of Glasgow, the merged international window follows, meaning no club football for three weeks.

## Scottish League Cup draw sets old September Old Firm double header

Rangers were good value for the 5-1 win over St Mirren on Sunday.

Derek McInnes went into the game [demanding that the fans see action](https://readrangers.com/2026/08/16/derek-mcinnes-declares-need-for-rangers-action).

His players duly obliged.

It wasn’t quite an outstanding Rangers performance but there was purpose and tempo in the play, as they proved too much for the Buddies to handle.

Goals from Ryan Naderi, a Vanja Dragojevic blockbuster, Djedi Gassama, James Penrice and the returning Ross McCausland provided the story of a satisfactory afternoon for Rangers and McInnes.

Wins buy time. Clearly, McInnes’ needs both.

### Old Firm double header bookmarks the first stage of the season

Rangers fixture list through to the first international break of the 2026/27 season is now complete.

We know what’s at stake and what is to follow.

Further signings, and departures, are required, but the timeline is now set with everthing to unfold between now and the end of next month
