# Rangers’ Ross McCausland inclusion sends double message on pressing transfer matter

**Ross McCausland playing for Derek McInnes’ Rangers team. Ross McCausland scoring for Rangers in a competitive game this season.**

Those are two lines that most did not expect to hear this season.

In a pre-season period where McCausland barely featured, the Northern Ireland international grabbed his opportunity with both hands, when given the nod in Sunday’s 5-1 victory over St Mirren in the Scottish League Cup.

He made a few clever passes and then was in the right place to slam home the Gers’ fifth goal of the afternoon, after Lawrence Shankland almost found the net.

The victory over St Mirren set up a quarter-final clash with Celtic, in an [Old Firm double header that will define September](https://readrangers.com/2026/08/16/scottish-league-cup-old-firm-quarter-final-draw).

## Shop window meets transfer reminder on Ross McCausland

It could be said that McCausland’s inclusion is a double message, made in full public view.

The first is that McInnes is saying to Ibrox chiefs, ‘This is what I have, I need to use McCausland given that there is no other winger support.’

The second message is one put in the shop window, alerting interested clubs to McCausland’s availability.

The former Linfield youth product was a surprise inclusion on 63 minutes, replacing Djeidi Gassama after [Findlay Curtis](https://readrangers.com/2026/08/09/derek-mcinnes-reveals-findlay-curtis-situation) had already come on for Daisuke Yokota.

Rangers have no other wingers.

### What next for Ross McCausland?

In recent weeks, Ross McCausland has been linked with possible moves to Switzerland and Portugal.

He will have interest from closer to home, but the reality is that he’s still at Ibrox.

With two wingers still on McInnes’ shopping list this summer, his chances will be few and far between for Rangers.

He isn’t what the club needs going forward, but there’s no shame in that.

He should move on to play regular football and for his own career progression, but for as long as he remains, the 23-year-old will give his all for the club that he loves.
