# Rangers tactical shift proves defensive reward after £3m Philadelphia Union arrival

Rangers have secured immediate defensive stability at Ibrox Stadium following the £3 million arrival of South African centre-back Olwethu Makhanya from Philadelphia Union.

Manager Derek McInnes has utilised the 22-year-old to implement a flexible tactical shape across his opening month. The Bafana Bafana international anchored four clean sheets in his first five matches, displaying technical composure alongside central partner Emmanuel Fernandez.

This dominant start quickly prompted [Richard Gough to send a direct message](https://readrangers.com/2026/09/14/richard-gough-sends-direct-message-to-olwethu-makhanya/) to the new arrival.

## Tactical Flexibility Against Celtic

McInnes shifted into a back three during Sunday’s 3-0 derby victory over Celtic. Makhanya was deliberately deployed wide to track winger Camilo Duran, demonstrating assured one-on-one defending that effectively neutralised the danger.

While the manager navigates a separate [January contract dilemma involving Nicolas Raskin](https://readrangers.com/2026/09/17/rangers-face-nicolas-raskin-dilemma-after-failed-summer-transfer/), his defensive foundation appears firmly set. Former full-back Alan Hutton praised the recruit’s seamless transition from Major League Soccer.

Speaking to the [Daily Record](https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/olwethu-makhanya-sparks-creeping-rangers-37668860.amp), Hutton highlighted the defender’s authority at the back.

“Everything that he’s done in terms of coming out with the ball, his one-v-one defending is so cool and composed. He’s just so calm in every situation,” Hutton said.

The £3 million signing has provided the exact defensive leadership the club required.

Rangers travel to Celtic Park for their next Premiership fixture on 20 September.
