# Why Rangers must win at Tynecastle to silence doubt

**When Rangers take on Hearts on Wednesday, they go into the game needing to prove a point to silence some justified doubt.**

For too long, Rangers have been able to take care of Old Firm derbies against Celtic, only to falter when it comes to the ‘lesser’ teams in the Scottish Premiership.

After the recent [blemish against Dundee](https://readrangers.com/2026/10/19/derek-mcinnes-dundee-missed-opportunity), there is an element of added pressure riding on this week’s capital clash.

The Gers trail Celtic by four points as things stand.

They can’t afford for that gap to increase.

## Stage set for Derek McInnes

For obvious reasons, [Derek McInnes](https://readrangers.com/2026/10/27/derek-mcinnes-rangers-injury-news-update-hearts) will be very keen to take all three points on his return to Tynecastle.

There will be plenty of attention and disdain coming his way from the home crowd, but his only focus will be adding to Rangers’ points tally.

The former Hearts boss is well placed when it comes to preparing to face his old side, so this one will come down to who performs best on the night.

[Hearts vs Rangers](https://readrangers.com/2026/10/27/how-to-watch-hearts-rangers-kick-off-team-news) is set up to be a cracking encounter, with both sides in decent form.

The hosts have a few injuries to contend with, but they will still take the game to Rangers, who will be out to exploit the space available.

Rangers will make very few, if any, changes for this game, and that selection would be jutified on the basis of Saturday’s performance against St Johnstone.

## Rangers must avoid previous failures

For all the optimism around Rangers, the fans are still disappointed about the nature of the draw at Dundee.

No-one is getting carried away.

Going back to last season, there was the post-split capitulation, and even the likes of the Fir Park draw against ten men in February, which would have reduced the deficit to three points.

When the opportunity has presented itself, Rangers have passed it up too often. Too many false dawns.

This is the familiar, previous failure that Derek McInnes must navigate on Wednesday.

Here is the chance to go seven points ahead of Hearts and keep the pressure on Celtic. Such a result would send a message on the Gers’ title credentials.

McInnes must make it loud and clear.
