McGregor deemed surplus to requirements

Rangers have announced that defender Darren McGregor has left the club by mutual consent.

The 30-year-old signed last summer from St. Mirren made 50 appearances for the ‘Gers under former managers, Ally McCoist, Kenny McDowall and Stuart McCall, netting 5 times.

His departure is a shock considering the fact that McGregor earned the club’s Player of the Year and Players’ Player of the Year awards last season. Despite a disappointing season for the Light Blues last term, McGregor was always a standout with his no-nonsense defending and committed performances.

However with the arrival of new boss Mark Warburton, he has fallen down the pecking order at Ibrox so much so that he’s failed to make an appearance under Warburton.

In addition, with the signings of fellow central defenders Danny Wilson, Rob Kiernan and recently Dominic Ball coming in on loan, along side Marius Zaliukas, McGregor has been deemed surplus to requirements. Thus leaving Warburton with only four recognised central defenders.

Warburton spoke to reporters earlier in the day and commented that it was likely one or two players would be leaving before the end of the transfer window.

A club spokesman said, “Darren leaves with the club’s best wishes for a successful future. McGregor had two spells with Cowdenbeath before spending four years with St.Mirren in the Premiership.”

Here is some breaking fan reaction to the news of McGregor’s departure.

It has been confirmed that the player has signed for championship rivals Hibernian on a two-year deal.
