Remember the 17- year old nervous Barry Mckay (above) trudging through his Rangers career in the doldrums of the third tier of Scottish football three years ago? Nope? Neither do we.
It seems this season young Barry McKay is really living up to his full potential and is flourishing on the wings at Ibrox. The youngster today thanked manager Mark Warburton for offering him a second chance at Ibrox after being made to feel unwanted at Ibrox by former boss Ally McCoist. The 21-year-old winger saw out two loan spells before returning to Ibrox, trying to make an impact at both Raith Rovers and Greenock Morton, but notching up only 4 goals in 41 appearances whilst at both clubs respectively.
The Ibrox star today said that:
“the change of gaffer really helped in that sense. Being sent out on loan obviously benefited me because I got to go out and pick up some experience. But you do feel you’re not really wanted at Rangers at the time and that you’re not really needed.”
After the mass exodus at Rangers in the summer, manager Mark Warburton kept faith in young McKay and the player has made 28 appearances so far this term, scoring 5 goals in the process including a stunning solo effort last week against Cowdenbeath.
“We all spoke to the manager (Mark Warburton) when he came in and he said we wouldn’t be held responsible for anything that happened in the past,” the Paisley-born youngster said.
“He told us it was up to us to get hold of the jersey then keep it. Now I just need to keep going so that I can repay him for his faith in me.
“I’ve got a lot to thank him for. He’s come in, given me that chance.”
With McKay expected to join Andy Halliday and Jason Holt in signing a new long term deal with the ‘Gers this week it seems the future is bright for the youngster at Ibrox.
