Forrester in hunt for Rangers contract after slow start

Harry Forrester has won over the Rangers fans with his recent performances, but now he has to get the backing of the boardroom.

The Ibrox attacking midfielder is looking for his fourth goal in as many matches tonight against Morton.

The 25-year-old is receiving the awards after taking on board Mark Warburton’s advice of not trying too hard to convince the club of his long-term worth.

The former Watford ace moved to Ibrox in January on a six-month deal after failing to make it with League One side Doncaster Rovers.

Warburton recently suggested that he is ready to sit down and talk about a new contract with Forrester at the end of the season if Rangers win the Championship.

The Light Blue’s board are yet to approach him with details of a new contract but he has made it clear that he wants to stay.

Forrester said: “There have been no conversations yet but I’ve just got myself in the team and I’m returning to the levels I should be reaching.

“I have not played a great deal of football this season so I’m just happy to be performing.

“I love playing at Ibrox, the fans have warmed to me in the last couple of weeks and I am enjoying every moment.

“I understand why fans might have thought, ‘Why are we signing him?’ From an outsiders point of view I couldn’t get in the Doncaster team when they were down the bottom of League One.

“There were a lot of factors why I didn’t play at Doncaster and sometimes that happens.

“I want to stay here for longer. It is not up to me, it is up to the club.

“In my first six months here, if I could win the league, play in an Old Firm game and see where we go there would be many better starts.

“We will see what happens at the end of the season. I have just started getting in the team so all I can do is focus on the next game.”

Warburton managed Forrester early in his career at Vicarage Road and also for a short spell at Brentford before they reunited at Ibrox for a third spell.

Warburton said: “Harry has embraced the challenge but he’s a good, technical player.

“There is no doubt he needed an arm around his shoulder to make him feel like he belongs somewhere.”

Forrester came on against St Mirren and scored the only goal of the game and followed it up with a goal on his first start at Ibrox the following week against Raith.

He also stunned the home side with an early opening goal in the Glasgow sides 4-0 hammering over Dundee in the Scottish Cup quarter-final.

He added: “It’s about time they started going in. The manager told me from day one just go out and play.

“He knows me as a person. The first goal was a boost and I have just kicked on from there. It always helps when fans warm to me.”
