- Rangers winger Djeidi Gassama accepts first call up for Mauritania to face Argentina this week.
- The former France U20 international previously rejected a call up in 2024 but has reversed his decision.
- This marks a huge moment for Mauritanian football who are looking to kick on within African football.
Rangers winger Djeidi Gassama is set to share the stage with some of world football’s biggest superstars at La Bombonera this week.
Previous rejection
Gassama previously represented France at U20 level during his time at PSG and had turned down an earlier approach from Mauritania while at Sheffield Wednesday.
“We’ve been in contact with his entourage for maybe eight or nine months now,” Abdou said.
“For the moment, they’re reluctant to join the national team. You shouldn’t force people.
“Those who truly want to wear the Mauritania crest and proudly represent the country, the door is open to them.”
Gassama commits to Mauritania
However, Aritz Lopez Garai, the current Mauritania manager, has now convinced the Gers wide man to commit internationally.
The player himself admitted he has continued to follow the team closely since declining that previous opportunity, with their recent progress playing a role in his decision.
“Honestly, it’s a pleasure to be with the Mauritanian national team. I’ve watched and followed them over the last few years,” Gassama said.
“It’s a pleasure, and I hope we can achieve great things together.”
There appears to be no lingering ill feeling among supporters regarding his earlier decision.
Speaking to a Mauritanian fan who runs a national team news page, the response was overwhelmingly positive.
“Fans are thrilled to see him play for Mauritania,” he said.
“In 2024, the player chose to focus on his development at club level, there’s no issue with that.”
Africa on the rise
African journalist Moussa Ramde believes Gassama’s decision also reflects a wider shift in the game.
“The Scottish league is increasingly seen as a showcase for African players, offering significant visibility,” he explained.
“Gassama’s acceptance to play for Mauritania after several years of reflection highlights this trend.
“African football is progressing, and infrastructure improvements, such as those observed during AFCON 2025.
“This is helping to convince dual-national players to return and play for their countries of origin.
“African teams, including those of Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast, and Senegal, have succeeded in convincing dual nationals to join their national teams.
“Mauritania, after its strong performances in AFCON 2024, is looking to recruit players like Gassama to strengthen its national team and continue progressing.”
Djeidi Gassama vs Lionel Messi
“It’s a historic match, by far the biggest event in Mauritanian football history,” he said.
“Playing against the current world champions at La Bombonera, in front of a sold-out crowd, is spectacular.
“Among the players, there is a mix of excitement, nerves and surprise. For them, facing Argentina is the ultimate test.”
While reluctant to single out individuals, the Mauritania boss highlighted the growing strength of his squad.
“We are becoming more competitive, and we have players performing in stronger leagues, even in European competitions,” he added.

For Gassama, who has experienced inconsistent form in his debut season at Ibrox, it offers a chance to impress against some of the world’s best.
A competitive performance could be what the winger needs to return to Danny Rohl’s squad for the Premiership title run-in rejuvenated and full of confidence.
Rangers already rejected a reported eight-figure loan-to-buy offer from Monaco for the winger.
If Rohl wishes to be proved right in that decision, he needs his winger to add to his two league goals and four assists in the crucial post-split period.
