- Tavernier holds record for most Team of the Year appearances
- Departing club captain won the award in the 2020/21 season
- Englishman has been selected in seven of the last ten seasons
It is a week to the day since club captain James Tavernier announced his departure from Rangers Football Club.
The 34-year-old is leaving Rangers after 11 years and has four matches remaining of his career at Ibrox.
The shortlist for PFA Scotland’s Premiership Player of the Year has been announced and it is the first time since the 2012/13 season where neither a Rangers or Celtic player feature in the nominations.
However, amongst that statistic is a list of the top ten appearances made in the team overall with the soon-to-be former Rangers captain named as the record holder.
Tavernier leading appearances list highlights Rangers contribution
James Tavernier has been selected in six Scottish Premiership Team of the Years in his tenure at Ibrox and went on to win Player of the Year in the 2020/21 season.
That is the most appearances made at a single club since the award was established in 2006.
The figure increases to seven times in the last decade when you include his inclusion in the Scottish Championship team in 2015/16 season, his inaugural season at Rangers.
It means that the Englishman has eclipsed Allan McGregor (5), Kris Boyd (4) and Alfredo Morelos (3).
Meanwhile, his win in 2021 means he has joined the company of Ally McCoist, Barry Ferguson and the late Andy Goram as one of 11 Rangers players to receive the coveted award.
As a player, it is a huge achievement to appear in the Team of a Year, let alone be nominated for Player of the Year and win it.
The fact that Tavernier has appeared seven times in the last decade and won Player of the Year represents not just his importance but how much of a key influence he has been to Rangers.
To have six appearances in the top-flight alone, more than any other Rangers player only underlines the captain’s impact at the club during his tenure.

James Tavernier holds the record for most Team of the Year appearances with seven appearances in the last ten years.
His Player of the Year award in 2021 means he is just the 11th Rangers player to win and was the first since Steven Davis in 2010.
Who knows when or if we will witness a Rangers player achieve such a feat ever again.
This shows that Tavernier’s legacy is more than titles or Europa League adventures, it is also about consistency and a sense of duty.
