Oli McBurnie struck a late winner to send Hull City into the Championship playoffs and complete a dramatic final-day swing over Norwich City, managed by former Rangers boss Phillipe Clement.

The decisive goal ensured Hull leapfrogged Wrexham in the closing moments of the season, edging out the Hollywood-backed Welsh team.

Rangers duo secure playoff place

It also carries added significance for former Rangers duo Kieran Dowell and John Lundstram.

Both of whom are part of the Hull squad now in position to fight for Premier League football.

Hull now join Millwall, Southampton and Middlesbrough in the promotion battle, with momentum on their side after a defining late-season victory.

Phillipe Clement Norwich turnaround

Clement, in his first full season at Norwich after taking over in November 2025, has overseen a major turnaround that pushed the Canaries into contention late in the campaign.

However, the early season damage would prove too much to overcome and they had nothing to play for heading into today’s final matchday.

Clement reflected on the progress made under his management despite the disappointment.

“In all my time in football management, it has been one of the most amazing turnarounds,” he said.

“The way the players and staff have reacted gives me a lot of ambition for the future.”

Dowell has Lundstram to thank

For Dowell, who joined Hull permanently in January after leaving Rangers, the result is a chance to compete for promotion.

While his former Rangers cohort John Lundstram is also expected to make his move permanent after a loan spell from Trabzonspor this season.

The pair previously worked under Clement at Ibrox.

This adding another layer to Hull’s decisive triumph over their former manager.

Now, attention turns to the playoffs, where Hull will aim to convert their dramatic late push into a return to the Premier League.
