Charlie Adam believes Rangers already have the midfield pairing to go far this season.
Nico Raskin and Dan Neil are the pair he means, with the former Ranger believing they can go further with a greater impact.
Speaking to the Daily Record, the former Liverpool and Stoke City player says they have shown enough under Derek McInnes to be built around for the season ahead.
“A central midfield with Dan Neil and Nico Raskin is at a very good level.
“Dan has Premier League experience. He’s a very good player and I could see what he was going to give Rangers,” Adam said.
“Dan was at a big club in Sunderland but it’s a big step up going to Ibrox. Everyone expects you to hit the ground running quickly but it can take a bit of time to get used to it and settle in. You have seen in the last few weeks how good a player Dan is.
“There was a lot of talk in the summer about Nico’s future after the World Cup. He had started for a Belgium team full of quality players. Derek was in as new manager, there was speculation that Nico would move on.
“Then he stays and it looks like he is really starting to find his form.
“Together with Dan, that’s a strong combination – but it will also push the other midfielders on. You want that standard to be set and that’s what those boys have done.”
Focal point for Rangers
Adam’s assessment is striking given where this partnership stood only six weeks ago.
It was a midfield and a team out of sorts. Not anymore!
The late St. Mirren victory then the Old Firm double header has changed everything.
Supporters who followed that story closely can revisit our Raskin contract piece and our Ferguson reaction piece for the background.
The two derbies back up Adam’s confidence in Raskin and Neil as a pairing. Neil scored twice in the 3-0 Premier Sport Cup win at Ibrox. Raskin was again prominent when Rangers won 1-0 in the league meeting across the city, the following week.
Next Saturday against Kilmarnock brings the latest test.
The international break will be gone and the Old Firm wins are a distant, pleasant memory. It’s time to push on, and the players need to show on the pitch that they are up to the task.
The midfield focal point of Neil and Raskin must raise the bar
