Connor Barron – what happens next amid Middlesbrough struggle?

Connor Barron – what happens next amid Middlesbrough struggle?

It’s been a few months to forget for Rangers’ midfielder Connor Barron, currently on loan and out of the picture at Middlesbrough.

A few weeks into the Derek McInnes reign, it became apparent that the Aberdonian would not be a regular for the new boss.

Worse than that, he has been deemed surplus to requirements, with Cammy Devlin having a similar skillset and obviously preferred to Barron.

The stalemate opened the door for a late transfer window loan move to Teesside, but the switch is yet to bear fruit.

Connor Barron has still not featured for Boro, but head coach Kim Hellberg insists the Scotsman is a “good player” and will get his chance at the Riverside Stadium.

As reported by the Northern Echo, the Swedish coach insisted that opportunities will follow.

“I think you can see a lot of teams now where players they signed in the summer are starting to come into the teams a bit more now, said Hellberg.

“It was very difficult at the start of the season, when you are playing all the time, to get new signings ready.

“You had players who were maybe coming in after not really having a pre-season, so I think a lot of teams have struggled with getting new players into their squad and up to speed.

“He (Barron) was working very well during the break and it is good to have him in the squad now. He is a very good player.”

No future likely at Ibrox

It could be said that Connor Barron is playing for his future, but that’s unlikely to be at Ibrox under Derek McInnes.

Especially now with the midfield setup of Dan Neil and Nico Raskin, you don’t see Barron fitting one of those two berths.

In reserve, Tochi Chukwuani and Vanja Dragojevic are the current options from the bench, or if a three-man midfield is required, with Devlin currently injured.

The English Championship is a league in which Connor Barron can prosper.

Hopefully, he will get the chance to prove his worth, but it might take another move to truly make his next step.

Yes, it’s premature to completely write off his Rangers future, but it’s also a realistic scenario.
