- Rangers are all but out of the title race after defeat to Hearts on Monday
- Defeat has heaped pressure on Danny Rohl who is facing the ire of Gers’ support
- McLeish stresses that the manager must continue to be supported
Alex McLeish has provided his thoughts on Danny Rohl in the aftermath of Rangers’ defeat to Hearts on Monday night.
The loss at Tynecastle has heaped pressure on the German with the Gers’ title hopes ripped to shreds.
Rangers will now need to pick themselves up for the remaining three matches, starting with Sunday’s Old Firm clash at Celtic Park.
And McLeish has responded by stressing the need to back the manager as the season reaches its conclusion.
McLeish on conversation with Ibrox director before Hearts match
The former Rangers boss, who managed the club for five years between 2001 to 2006 revealed he has been in contact with Fraser Thornton, who holds a seat on the Rangers board.
He recalled Thornton’s belief that the club have “got the right ideas and that they are headed in the right direction.”
McLeish believes there has to be trust in the Rangers hierarchy and that know what they are doing.
There is clearly unity in the boadroom about the route Rangers are going down and the 67-year-old has used this as an example to reiterate the same has to be applied regarding Rohl’s position.
Former Rangers boss comments on Danny Rohl – and he is right
McLeish urged chairman Andrew Cavenagh to maintain his public support of the German in what is arguably the first time Rohl has been categorised as a manager under pressure.
He then went on to state: “And of course Danny had resurrected the team and got it back into a title race.”
When you rewind back to last October when Rohl was appointed and remember the mess he inherited from Russell Martin, the German must be applauded for getting Rangers into a title race in the first place.
Yes, the Gers have collapsed in their battle to clinch the title but the turnaround under Rohl to instil belief and hope to a season that looked beyond repair after seven league games is commendable.
The manager has also only had the January window, which is much harder to navigate and deserves the chance to shape the squad with his own players this summer.

Alex McLeish’s backing of Danny Rohl shows that he is calling for stability.
Despite the disappointing derailment of their title race, the work Rohl has done to resurrect Rangers’ season should not be forgotten.
Rangers have to break the cycle that is the revolving door of managers and if Cavenagh and co. believe Rohl is their man then they must stick by him.
Come hell or high water.
