In the latest ‘On This Day’ feature we rewind the clock back to a moment in Rangers’ history from almost 50 years ago.
Rangers won the Scottish Cup at Hampden with a 2-1 victory over Aberdeen thanks to goals from Alex MacDonald and Derek Johnstone.
In addition to what was Rangers’ 22nd Scottish Cup, it also marked the day the Gers won their fourth treble after winning both the league title and Scottish League Cup against Celtic.
Jock Wallace’s men finished two points clear of the second placed Dons in the league on 55 points.
Rangers route to Hampden and a second treble in three years
Rangers began their Scottish Cup campaign with a 4-2 away victory to Berwick Rangers in the third round.
This could be classified as revenge after the Shielfield Park club knocked the Gers out of the Scottish Cup 11 years prior in what remains one of the biggest shocks in Scottish football history.
That was followed by a narrow 1-0 victory over Stirling Albion at Ibrox before a comfortable win against Kilmarnock in the quarter-finals.
It was Jim McLean’s Dundee United who were the team Rangers had to overcome to reach the final which they accomplished with a 2-0 scoreline.
Cup triumph brings the reign of Rangers’ sixth manager to a close
The day is also significant for marking the end of Jock Wallace’s tenure as Rangers manager with the triumph at Hampden his last match in charge.
Wallace departed just over a fortnight later after spending six years at the helm, winning three league titles, three Scottish Cups and two League Cups.
He was immediately replaced by John Greig.
However, this proved not to be the end of Wallace’s association with Rangers as he returned for a second spell as boss between 1983 and 1986.
Rangers starting lineup: Peter McCloy, Sandy Jardine, Colin Jackson, John Greig, Tom Forsyth, Tommy McLean, Bobby Russell, Alex MacDonald, Davie Cooper, Derek Johnstone, Gordon Smith
