OK, the stalemate with West Ham wasn’t spectacular, but there were reasons to be cheerful ahead of the Scottish Premiership opener against Dundee United on Friday.
There was an increase in purpose from the win over St Etienne and, crucially, greater solidity in the shape and work rate. Rangers were focused in defence and impressive off the ball.
Yes, there are obvious issues still needing attention.
Zero goals from open play in the two Ibrox games this week is a concern. There isn’t enough of a spark middle to front. The creativity and flair is absent. Rangers strikers need more service and support.
The good news is that the manager is aware of this. Rangers are actively working on further signings, with two new arrivals expected in the coming days.
What Derek McInnes said about Rangers transfer business
McInnes gave the impression that a defender and a wide attacker were next on the agenda. For the good of the squad and to maximise the chances this season, this writer suggests that two defenders are necessary, with one able to cover left-back if another full-back is not likely to happen.
At the other end of the pitch, at least two wingers are a must. Curtis, Gassama, Antman and Aasgaard just won’t do.
This situation has to be the priority, but it’s understandable if Rangers will wait until the late stage of the transfer window before the final business is conducted.
Rangers reasons to be cheerful
Ben Godfrey put in a timely display of his credentials.
The England international barely put a foot wrong all day and looked very comfortable alongside Manny Fernandez. Hopefully, consistency will follow.
He was particularly effective in staying tight to his man, not afraid to engage and disrupt high up the pitch.
Cammy Devlin was at his high-octane, aggressive best once again. There won’t be a dull moment with him; sometimes incredible, others infuriating.
Thelo Aasgaard sent another reminder of what he is capable of. Just before his shoulder injury – which McInnes said will be fine for Friday – he was increasingly impacting the game and making a difference going forward.
Doubts remain if he can perform consistently, but he will be afforded a chance under the new boss.
