Derek McInnes’ Rangers team got the job done in a convincing manner against St. Johnstone on Saturday and that sense of certainty needs to roll into a new week.
Over the next five days, Derek McInnes will face two of his former clubs, Hearts and Aberdeen, in the Premiership and League Cup, respectively.
The objective is the same: Rangers must win.
A defining week starts now, with the stakes piled high.
Rangers return to winning ways
There was plenty to like in the victory over St. Johnstone at the weekend, with the game played against a backdrop of horrendous weather.
The Gers should have much more than one goal to show for their first-half endeavours given how dominant they were. The team nearly paid the price in the second half.
Minsu Kim continues to provide the quality and inspiration that is required. He is leading by example, even if the goals are still proving elusive.
From a creative perspective, he was pivotal in the first, his shot made the second, and his corner led to the third. The Korean’s impact was stamped all over the game.
One concern was the sloppy way in which Rangers approached the second half, letting Saints back into the game.
However, the second arrived and soon after the outcome was a formality. 4-0 was a deserved margin of victory.
Fighting on two fronts
This week, Rangers must continue the Premiership momentum.
Wednesday night will be a cracker, with much to be made of McInnes’ return to Tynecastle, even if Shankland and Devlin won’t be in action for the Gers.
Hearts will be up for it, and determined to put down a marker – the same applies to Rangers and their title credentials under McInnes.
Bring it on.
Come next weekend, the league campaign takes a back seat when Rangers go to Hampden.
Aberdeen stand in the way of booking a place in the first domestic final of the season. The League Cup trophy is an important milestone for Rangers and Derek McInnes, but the team need to earn their place in the final.
Saturday evening’s game will carry a different dynamic, as much as it’s another must-win encounter.
An enthralling week awaits, with two high-profile fixtures for Rangers. It’s time to stand up and be counted.
