How can Hearts allow Rangers sign Lawrence Shankland on a free transfer?

Late last night, news emerged of the potential high-profile transfer of Lawrence Shankland from Hearts to Rangers.

How can that happen?

Hearts’ captain. Derek McInnes’ talisman. Scotland World Cup squad member and the overall focal point of the side that came so close to landing the league title.

As ever, the devil is in the detail.

Hearts claimed Shankland signed three-year deal

Last Summer, a protracted contract situation appeared to have been resolved when the Jambos re-signed their skipper to a three-year contract…or so it appeared.

That was the official line published by the Gorgie club, but the events of the last 12 hours have shattered that illusion.

As widely reported by now, the terms of the new deal signed by the 30-year-old have allowed for an effective ‘break clause’.

Lawrence Shankland has been the architect for his dream move

The finer detail is yet to emerge with obvious sensitivity around the transfer, but all the talk is of an ‘undisclosed fee’ or little to no money.

Clearly, Lawrence Shankland has been the architect of his path, which is leading back along the M8 to his home city of Glasgow.

As a boyhood fan of the club, Shankland has waited a long time for this. He has come close before, but frustration and rejection have prevailed.

This time is different.

Lawrence Shankland is coming home to Glasgow and Rangers.
