Following the Europa League qualifying loss to Jagiellonia Bialystok, Rangers are now on a club-record run of seven consecutive European away losses and a goal conceded in 13 consecutive games, respectively.
It all started so well with Derek McInnes’ side taking the lead in this Europa League third qualifying round, first-leg clash, but the joy was short-lived.
The lead didn’t quite last 10 minutes when the hosts equalised on 13 minutes, and eight minutes later they were ahead.
McInnes will be irate at the goals conceded, given how preventable they were. This was another unconvincing performance from Rangers and another game without a goal from open play.
Rangers set two new unwanted club records in Europe
There will be a sense of relief that Rangers are still in the tie.
Jagiellonia could and should have scored at least one more. Conversely, Findlay Curtis’ sweet strike in the dying minutes deserved a goal.
The contest is far from over, and both sides will be optimistic that they can get the job done next week at Ibrox.
The pressure will be on Derek McInnes and Rangers to turn things around and that can be done. Tonight’s second half showed the way to get at the Polish side, but the Gers’ cutting edge was elusive once again.
Beyond the outcome of this Europa League tie, McInnes’ Rangers still have so much to do.
There is no real quality or identity about this team yet.
It doesn’t look like a team in the manager’s image, nor is there any particular fixed system or style. They are not good enough on or off the ball and that reflects the extent of the challenge ahead for the manager.
The unwanted Euro records will be the least of his worries, but the return leg next week provides a chance to record a statistic for the right reasons.
