Derek McInnes has confirmed that Vanja Dragojevic will play at Right Back after the Rangers team to play Hibs was announced.
The Gers will go with a 4-4-2 in this crucial Scottish Premiership clash, with some players rewarded after their input in the second half in Thursday’s loss to Jagiellonia Bialystok in the Europa League.
Eyebrows were raised with the omission of Dujon Sterling and Ross McCrorie from the starting XI, raising the possibility of McInnes opting for a 3-5-2 shape.
That was dispelled by the manager in conversation with Rangers TV pre-match.
McInnes confirms Dragojevic, Sterling situation for Rangers v Hibs
Derek McInnes explained some of the reasoning behind the six changes made from Thursday night.
“We’re just trying to get some freshness where we can, said the Gers boss.
“Dujon has previously struggled with three games in a week, and we want to make sure he is going the right way.
“Vanja will play from the full-back position. He can do that, because he’s quite versatile in that sense. He’s happy to play in that role and he’s a good user of the ball.”
The other changes mean a debut for Olwethu Makahanya, and a recall for Nico Raskin, Cammy Devlin and Findlay Curtis.
Club captain Lawrence Shankland also returns to the starting line-up
Further concern for Dujon Sterling
While it’s understandable that Sterling’s minutes and condition are being managed, it points to the overall situation surrounding the London-born 26-year-old.
How can he truly be considered a first-choice player for Rangers if he can’t play three games a week when called upon?
His injury history is never too far away, and it will be a surprise if he makes it through to next month without an issue.
That’s not meant to be harsh or disrespectful, just an honest reflection of the reality.
Three points are a must for Rangers today to get the first competitive victory for Derek McInnes.
