Rangers are ‘considering’ a move for Portland Timbers striker Kevin Kelsy as a replacement for the injured Youssef Chermiti, according to the latest reports.
The towering frontman has emerged as an option as Derek McInnes hunts a new number nine before the window shuts early next month.
Derek McInnes can’t afford to wait that long, given the situation the team is in now.
The Gers were plunged back into the striker market at the worst possible moment. Chermiti suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury in Sunday’s defeat by Hibernian, only days after the club rejected a substantial bid for the forward from Galatasaray.
Another suggested candidate, Sheffield United’s Ryan One, has already been played down.
Why Kelsy fits the Rangers striker brief
McInnes has made no secret of how badly the Chermiti injury has hurt his plans.
“Selfishly, he’s a big part of what we wanted to do this season and he’s obviously a talented boy,” the manager told BBC Sport, adding that the club are “trying to be quite proactive” in the market because “number nines are normally the most difficult ones to get”.
The recruitment push will not stop at a striker, with McInnes also chasing a left-back and wingers before the deadline.
First, though, comes Thursday night’s Europa League decider against Jagiellonia Bialystok at Ibrox.
