The truth is emerging on the details surrounding Couhaib Driouech’s failed transfer to Rangers.
Suspicion was aroused after Driouech underwent a medical in Manchester on Tuesday, but two days later there was no sign of a completed deal.
The Dutch-Moroccan player attended Rangers’ draw with Jagiellonia Bialystok, which dumped the club out of the Europa League.
No wonder fans were referencing an injury to his eyes after that debacle.
Rangers Driouech deal collapses
The morning after the night before and the news breaks that the deal is off.
Initially, the Rangers Review detailed that an injury flagged during the medical procedure was the reason that the club pulled the plug.
This news was met with scepticism, understandably, but a follow-up from Eindhovens Dagblad ‘PSV Watcher’ Rik Elfrink backed up the claim, with the version of events from the Dutch club’s perspective.
Essentially, the truth lies in between and can be summarised as follows:
– A deal was verbally agreed between the clubs
– The medical showed Driouech fit for the long-term, but not ready to play immediately. PSV disagreed with this.
– Rangers went back to PSV and Driouech about this, with possible negotiation on the terms.
– Disagreement followed, and ultimately, Rangers pulled the plug on the deal.
Rangers want a winger ready to make an impact now
Rangers obviously need serious reinforcements now.
If the club believes an injury prevents Driouech from contributing now, with questions on his medium-term availability, the hesitancy is understandable.
The club will now move on and needs to identify an alternative option for the inverted left-wing position quickly.
After last night’s debacle, the pressure is building further, and time is of the essence.
Rangers and Derek McInnes need to find answers very soon before things develop into a full-blown crisis, but Couhaib Driouech won’t be one of those solutions.
