Scottish Premiership Deadline Day: What else is happening around the league

We are all familiar with what is happening around all the latest Rangers transfer news, but what about the rest of the Scottish Premiership?

While Rangers are waiting on the arrival of Kevin Kelsy and potentially another winger, it is expected that there will be more departures at Ibrox by the time the Scottish transfer window closes on Thursday evening.

The Scotsman has taken a deep dive into all the deadline day transfer goings-on, with a summary review provided below.

Scottish Premiership Deadline Day club-by-club overview

Aberdeen

Manager Stephen Robinson completed most of his business early and has built a harder-to-beat side. He described further signings as “very doubtful,” though the team lacks creativity from central areas. Major further departures are not expected after most of Jimmy Thelin’s previous signings were moved on.

Celtic

Celtic have already spent close to £25 million on forwards Kasper Høgh and Camilo Durán, winger Haissem Hassan, and midfielder Mika Baur (though this was not enough for Champions League qualification). Central midfield remains a priority: Parma’s Oliver Sørensen is set to join on loan, talks continue with Torino for Lithuanian midfielder Gvidas Gineitis, and they are closing in on 19-year-old Joel van den Berg (PSV Eindhoven).

Interest also exists in Crystal Palace’s Justin Devenny. A left-back backup for Kieran Tierney is wanted. Possible late outgoings include Benjamin Nygren and Reo Hatate if suitable offers arrive.

Dundee

Steven Pressley’s side has made a solid start and earned praise for its style after nine new arrivals. Further targets include a central defender and a wide midfielder. Simon Murray’s serious knee injury has been partly offset by the loan signing of Bobby Wales.

No major exits are expected.

Dundee United

A mixed start improved with a 4-0 win over Kilmarnock. Bids for Falkirk midfielder Brad Spencer were called “embarrassing” by Falkirk boss John McGlynn; it is unclear if United will return (Spencer could replace Vicko Sevelj, who left for Neftçi Baku). Left-back Will Ferry (out of contract at season’s end) rejected a move to Sigma Olomouc earlier and has drawn interest from Anderlecht; United want a seven-figure fee.

Falkirk

Significant upheaval after selling or returning players from last season’s successful side. They exited the Premier Sports Cup early and are still winless in the Premiership. Fourteen players have already arrived; further incomings are uncertain. They do not want to sell Brad Spencer despite Dundee United’s interest.

Hearts

Twelve senior players have already been signed via Jamestown Analytics, with a couple more expected. They are close to deals for two 18-year-olds: Swiss midfielder Leart Kabashi (Grasshoppers Zürich) and Faroese winger Aron Benjaminsen (Víkingur Gøta). Another centre-half is possible, though the squad is already large, so fringe players (Yan Dhanda, Sander Kartum, Elton Kabangu) may leave. First-teamers Claudio Braga and Tomas Magnusson have attracted monitoring all summer and could draw late bids.

Hibs

David Gray has indicated both incomings and outgoings are possible, making it potentially an active few days. A further attacking option could arrive, especially if record signing Thibault Klidjé (who has struggled for minutes) moves on. Interest exists in centre-half Warren O’Hora, but Hibs prefer to keep key defenders. They are braced for bids for midfielders Josh Mulligan and Miguel Chaiwa.

Kilmarnock

Bottom of the table with zero points. Neil McCann’s side has conceded heavily (including a recent 4-0 home loss to Dundee United). Nine players have already arrived. Burton Albion have shown interest in defender George Stanger, and Robbie Deas was pictured in a moonboot after the United game, so defensive reinforcements are possible despite McCann saying the squad is good enough.

Motherwell

New head coach Alfred Johansson has reshaped the squad amid exits and injuries. New striker Jardell Kanga scored on debut. Fresh blood would help, but the priority is retaining key players such as last season’s top scorer Tawanda Maswanhise (who has European admirers), plus Lukas Fadinger and Emmanuel Longelo.

St Johnstone

Promoted as Championship winners, they have continued attractive football. Simo Valakari is expected to seek a physical midfielder for added strength and possibly another striker to support Josh Fowler and others.

St Mirren

Craig McLeish has overhauled the squad (13 new arrivals, the most in the division for now) and changed the style.

The side sits third after a strong start. Further significant incomings are unlikely, though star man Killian Phillips (who drew earlier interest, including from Aberdeen) could attract late bids.
