Rangers saw their controversial spot-kick against Motherwell validated by former PGMOL chief Keith Hackett following a tense 1-0 victory at Ibrox Stadium. The decision by referee Duncan Nicolson to penalise Tom Sparrow for his challenge on Djeidi Gassama drew heavy criticism from the visitors, compounded by suggestions that VAR was malfunctioning during the match.
Hackett Backs Ibrox Call
Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News after the weekend clash, Hackett dismissed suggestions of an officiating error when Gassama was brought down inside the box.
“There can be no complaint here. The referee has made the correct decision to award a penalty kick,” Hackett confirmed.
Despite the validation from the former refereeing boss, the incident sparked significant frustration among the travelling support. Motherwell’s official social media channel immediately voiced their displeasure before Minsu Kim stepped up and dragged his effort wide of the target.
Motherwell Claim Justice Done
The missed opportunity prompted a sharp response from the away side, who posted: “Rangers have an incredibly soft-looking penalty. Justice done, as it’s blasted wide of the post.”
Rangers ultimately secured the three points through an early strike from Ryan Don Naderi, who capitalised on an error from goalkeeper Alex Paulsen. The narrow victory maintains a strong domestic run for Derek McInnes and his squad, securing a third consecutive league triumph.
While the debate surrounding matchday technology transparency continues, the Ibrox side will now look to build further momentum and refine their finishing in the final third ahead of their next domestic test.
