Former Rangers midfielder Thelo Aasgard missed his Anderlecht debut at the weekend after an unresolved domestic suspension carried over to Belgium.
The Norway international joined the Brussels club on loan with an option to buy ahead of the transfer deadline. He was subsequently forced into the stands for a goalless draw against Genk.
The absence stems from a straight red card received 11 months ago for a first-half challenge on Anthony Ralston. Rangers ultimately lost 3-1 to Celtic after extra time in that League Cup semi-final.
Under Scottish FA disciplinary regulations, the dismissal resulted in a two-match ban specific to the tournament. Aasgard sat out a victory against St Mirren earlier this season.
He departed before Derek McInnes’ side could face another fixture in the competition, while a recent Premier League forward bid highlighted ongoing squad changes.
FIFA Disciplinary Rules Enforced
Despite crossing international borders, the suspension remained active. The Belgian Football Association stepped in to enforce the remaining one-game ban.
Article 12 of the FIFA Regulations on the Status and Transfer of Players mandates cross-border compliance. The governing rule states: “Any outstanding suspension of up to four matches or three months following an international transfer must be enforced by the new national football association.”
With the legacy punishment now served, the 24-year-old is clear to make his first appearance when Anderlecht travel to face Mechelen on Friday.
Back at Ibrox, Rangers host St Mirren on Wednesday evening as they look to build on a narrow league victory over Motherwell.
