Rangers loanee Nedim Bajrami has suffered a significant setback after Saudi Pro League side Al-Taawoun saw their request to register him for the AFC Champions League Two rejected.
The Financial Sustainability Committee blocked the 27-year-old Albania international from continental competition due to strict financial regulations. The Saudi side qualified for Asia’s second-tier tournament after finishing sixth in their domestic league last season.
While his season-long temporary switch from Ibrox Stadium remains complete, this administrative barrier drastically limits his expected minutes on the pitch. Al-Taawoun are currently operating under heightened scrutiny regarding their spending and squad registration activity.
Future Transfer Fee Now In Doubt
Missing out on these continental fixtures directly threatens the likelihood of Al-Taawoun activating their £2.5 million option to buy next summer. Derek McInnes had already informed the midfielder that he was excluded from his current plans.
The Ibrox board are heavily reliant on prospective player sales to fund future transfer business. Bajrami initially joined Rangers from Sassuolo in August 2024 for £3 million and subsequently recorded over 60 appearances across all competitions.
His immediate departure was designed to free up wage space as the manager attempts to reconfigure his attacking options. Al-Taawoun must now attempt to navigate these domestic financial limitations.
The midfielder will await further developments from the Saudi club regarding a potential resolution for his match availability.
