Celtic board faces fierce fan backlash following 3-0 cup exit to Rangers

Celtic executives face escalating supporter backlash following a decisive 3-0 Premier Sports Cup quarter-final defeat to Rangers at Ibrox.

Manager Derek McInnes made crucial tactical adjustments ahead of his Old Firm debut, executing a high-pressing setup that dismantled the visitors. Captain Callum McGregor conceded his squad performed poorly during their League Cup exit, further validating the supporter unrest.

According to The Herald, Celtic Supporters Ltd condemned the ongoing leadership structure. “Results are downstream of decisions. Decisions are downstream of the people who make them,” the group stated. The collective questioned how many “wrong calls” the hierarchy can produce before sweeping changes transpire.

Fan Groups Demand Boardroom Accountability

Discussions on Monday between the Celtic Fans Collective, chief executive Michael Nicholson and finance officer Chris McKay failed to ease tensions. Morning Star noted that the meeting “compounded the necessity and urgency of change” at Parkhead. The supporters group accused the executives of “remaining detached from the concerns of its supporters and reluctant to confront the need for change.”

Manager Martin O’Neill dismissed suggestions of a weak mindset, telling HEAVY that the defeat stemmed from technical flaws. “We misplaced a lot of passes today when we were in really good possession, so that doesn’t help,” O’Neill added. Conversely, McGregor admitted to Glasgow Times that the squad “played like a team of individuals.”

Celtic face Rangers again in the Premiership on Sunday 20 September.
