The Scottish FA has appointed John Beaton to officiate Sunday’s Premiership fixture between Celtic and Rangers, with Nick Walsh assigned to VAR duties at Clydesdale House.
Walsh takes charge of the technology just seven days after refereeing Derek McInnes’s side during their commanding 3-0 Premier Sports Cup victory over Celtic at Ibrox Stadium.
Scrutiny Surrounds Recent Officiating Decisions
The officials will operate under intense pressure following debate over unpunished incidents during that quarter-final tie.
Former FIFA referee Keith Hackett exclusively told Ibrox News that he expected action when Rangers defender Olwethu Makhanya challenged Kasper Hogh.
“With the referee not awarding a penalty kick then looking at this clip I am surprised that there was no VAR intervention,” Hackett said.
He added: “Celtic have every right to be disappointed that a penalty kick was not awarded.”
Rangers head into the away-fan-free environment at Parkhead aiming to prevent the hosts from extending their table advantage.
McInnes Demands Intense Tactical Discipline
McInnes must ensure his squad maintains strict discipline under Beaton’s watch as they look to capitalise on Celtic’s disarray in Glasgow.
The manager also faces an attacking tactical rethink as he finalises his starting lineup for the midday kick-off.
Beaton last officiated this fixture in March during a 2-2 draw at Ibrox.
Rangers travel to Parkhead this Sunday.
