Kim was introduced after the interval as South Korea eased to a comfortable victory over Ecuador at Suwon World Cup Stadium.

It marked his first appearance for the senior national side, a landmark moment for the 21-year-old since he arrived in Scotland.

The winger has settled quickly into Derek McInnes’s plans at Rangers, and this call up confirms he’s now firmly on the international radar too.

His club form clearly played a part in earning the opportunity, and there has been plenty of fascination from South Korean fans about the player and his move to Ibrox.

Kim Dedicates International Debut to Grandmother

Kim marked the occasion with an emotional message on Instagram after the final whistle. Addressing his grandmother directly, he wrote: “Grandma, although I’m very late I have kept my promise. I love you.”

He went on to describe the nerves that came with pulling on his country’s shirt for the first time. “I was more nervous and trembling than in any game in my life because I was representing the Republic of Korea,” he said.

Kim added that the moment had been years in the making. “It was a dream come true because it was a situation I had always wished for and so even though it was short, it felt wonderful,” he explained, as relayed by the Daily Record.

Looking ahead, he was clear about wanting more. “This is only the beginning. I know how much it means to represent the national team, so I want to keep working hard and prove that I deserve to be here.

“Now that I’ve made my debut in this dreamlike place, I’ll work even harder so I can stay here as long as possible.”
