Lewis Ferguson has opened up on his long-standing friendship with Billy Gilmour, tracing the bond back to their shared days in the Rangers academy.
Speaking to the Daily Record, Ferguson said their partnership for Scotland still carries the trust built at Ibrox years ago.
The Lewis Ferguson Billy Gilmour Rangers link, formed long before either player wore a Scotland shirt, is obvious whenever the pair line up together now.
Ferguson and Gilmour progressed through the youth ranks together at Ibrox, a spell covered in our look back at Ibrox club history.
The Bologna man said: “We’ve also got a really good relationship too. I think we work well together and I hope we can continue that. We were at Rangers. He’s not really changed, to be honest.”
Ferguson Interview Details Midfield Dynamic and Fiorentina Goal
In the same Daily Record interview, Ferguson explained why their contrasting styles work so well together in Scotland’s midfield.
“Yes, I think we work well together because we’re completely different profiles of players. We both bring different things that can affect the game and help the team,” he said. It’s a simple explanation, but one that shows how well he understands his old Ibrox youth teammate’s game.
Ferguson also had a laugh at his friend’s expense over a rare piece of end product. Gilmour scored against Fiorentina, only the second goal of his senior career, and celebrated by running away with one arm raised in an Alan Shearer style.
Ferguson could not resist a message afterwards. “I know, I was laughing. He never scores! Especially from a corner. I text him straight after, because he ran away with the Shearer celebration. I thought, where have you pulled that from?”
Tactical Dynamic Under Pocognoli Following Tournament Heartbreaks
Sebastien Pocognoli began his reign as Scotland manager with a point away to Slovenia in the Nations League, setting his side up in a 3-4-1-2 system.
That shape gives both players central roles, and the contrast Ferguson described gives Pocognoli balance in the middle of the park rather than two midfielders doing the same job.
Both men know what it means to miss a major tournament through injury.
Ferguson missed Euro 2024 after suffering an ACL injury, while Gilmour missed the World Cup after damaging his knee in a warm-up match against Curacao. That shared setback, layered on top of their Lewis Ferguson Billy Gilmour Rangers roots, has shaped a friendship that now sits at the heart of Scotland’s midfield.
Upcoming Nations League Outlook for Scotland Midfield Duo
With Pocognoli’s Nations League campaign under way, Ferguson and Gilmour look set to stay central to his midfield plans.
Their understanding, built long before either reached the top level, gives Scotland a settled look through the middle of the pitch at a time when the manager is still shaping his system.
After the setbacks both have overcome, the pair will simply be glad to build minutes together again in dark blue.
For Rangers supporters who watched them come through together at Ibrox, it’s a partnership worth keeping an eye on as Scotland’s campaign continues.
