New Transfermarkt data puts Derek McInnes’ squad £18 million clear of Celtic, indicating that Rangers have the most valuable squad in Scottish football.
The Rangers squad value has climbed fast since the summer transfer window, built on a massive relevant outlay at Ibrox.
Transfermarkt’s update shows seven of the most valuable players in the Premiership now play for Rangers. It underlines the scale of the rebuild McInnes has pushed through since taking charge.
Transfermarkt data details £35.6m summer expenditure
Rangers spent a huge amount this summer rebuilding the squad, according to a Daily Record report on Transfermarkt figures.
It’s the biggest outlay in the club’s history. That investment has closed, then reversed, the valuation gap with Celtic.
Celtic also spent big. They signed six players: Camilo Duran, Kasper Hogh, Mika Baur, Haissem Hassan, Joel van den Berg and Jordan Lotomba, for a combined £31.6 million.
There’s more detail on the recruitment drive in our look at McInnes’ first 100 days in charge.
Individual valuations highlight Fernandez and Chermiti impact
Emmanuel Fernandez remains the most expensive player in Scotland, according to Transfermarkt. The site rates him top of the valuation table for the second year running.
He is currently listed at £13.6 million (€16m).
Youssef Chermiti and Nico Raskin share the next highest valuation in the league, both at £12.7 million.
Chermiti was the subject of a £22 million bid from Besiktas before he suffered an injury. That bid shows how highly clubs elsewhere rate him. Raskin’s price reflects the central role he’s taken in midfield since arriving at Ibrox.
Olwethu Makhanya’s market value has quadrupled since his move from Philadelphia Union. It’s a striking rise. He only joined Rangers recently, and his early form already shows up in the figures.
Outside the Old Firm, Hearts winger Claudio Braga is rated the most valuable player in the country, at £5.1 million.
He’s the clearest sign of how far Rangers’ individual valuations now sit above the rest of the division.
Transfermarkt valuation must be put into perspective
Transfermarkt is a useful source, and a good indicator of player values. No more than that.
The site is excellent for stats and data, but when it comes to valuations, take a step back.
Do you think Rangers will be accepting a £14 million bid for Fernandez, or £12.7m for Chermiti? Not a chance.
The recent upturn on the pitch provides a nice spike for the fees being discussed, driven by some excellent form from the likes of Olwethu Makhanya.
However, all of this needs to be put into context with the realities of football finance and transfer fees.
