Lyall Cameron’s season-long loan at Dundee United has delivered exactly what the midfielder needed: consistent minutes and a platform to rediscover his best form.
Since joining United in early September, the 24-year-old has made six Premiership appearances, contributing two goals and two assists.
Operating in a balanced midfield unit alongside the likes of Dylan Tait and Zidane Iqbal, Cameron has looked sharp. He fits Jim Goodiwn’s team.
Cameron’s ability to create chances, drive forward and link play has helped United sit comfortably in the top half of the table and build an impressive run of results, including last week’s draw at Parkhead.
This regular game time stands in sharp contrast to his limited opportunities at Ibrox.
After arriving from Dundee with a strong reputation and scoring on his European debut, Cameron managed only a handful of appearances before loans to Aberdeen and now Dundee United.
No way back for Cameron at Ibrox
The reality is that he has no future as a Rangers player.
At Tannadice, Lyall Cameron is once again a central figure rather than a fringe option.
For Rangers, the current situation strengthens the case for a permanent sale.
Cameron is performing at a good level week after week in the Premiership, proving his quality and maintaining his value. There’s the incentive to sell as soon as possible.
The midfielder looks settled at Tannadice, back in his home city, but Rangers will hold out for their valuation in any potential permanent sale.
That could well be more than the £400,000 that the club was told by an SPFL tribunal to pay Dundee for his services, in January this year.
