Warburton backs Skip for Scotland call-up

Mark Warburton has revealed that he believes Lee Wallace deserves a Scotland call up after a great run of form to start the new campaign.

Wallace, who this week received the captain’s armband on a permanent basis, has been in inspired form so far this season. The former Hearts man has netted twice already, in the 3-1 opening day win against St. Mirren,  and looks a level ahead of where he has been for the ‘Gers previously.

Warburton said, “His level of performance has been outstanding, and the way he has trained and handled himself from the first day of pre-season has been absolutely first class.

“I think everyone will agree his level of performance has also been first class, and for me, he’s going to force himself back into the international reckoning.

“He’s an outstanding full-back, a great athlete and he’s technically very, very strong. He’s a coach himself so he’s looking for new ideas and embraces new ideas, so all-round, he deserves responsibility, he will cherish it, and I’m sure he’ll embrace it.

“I would never speak for the international manager, but from my point of view working with him day-in and day-out and watching his weekly performances, he can’t be far away.”

Warburton’s comments came ahead of Wednesday’s cup tie away to Ayr in the Petrofac training cup, and the manager has refused the suggestion that Rangers will field a weaker team.

“We want to go and win games – and every game we go into, we want to win it, simple as that.”
