RANGERS chairman, Dave King, has been cleared of contempt of court after a long running battle with Sports Direct owner Mike Ashley.
The High Court ruled that the effort to find King guilty of contempt of breaching a gagging order should not have been brought and was an abuse of the process.
This comes as another set back to the Sports Direct owner in his altercation with Rangers after he failed to persuade a judge King should be jailed over the dispute.
The Newcastle United owner’s legal team tried claiming that the ‘Gers chairman was in contempt of court by breaking a confidentiality agreement by talking about the terms of merchandising contract between the two in a media interview.
Mr Justice Peter Smith shrugged off Ashley’s claim in the earlier hearing, saying:
“I am not going to send a person to prison on an interference.”
The legal battle has been estimated to have cost £400,000, so far. This is the latest development in a case that started when Dave King took over the Glasgow side and is based on the commercial agreements between the Ibrox club and Sports Direct and it’s subsidiaries.
