Rangers season could rest on 45 minutes in Paisley

Rangers’ aspirations to prevail in the SPFL Premiership title race could come down to 45 minutes in Paisley against St. Mirren on Sunday.

What are you talking about, I hear you say.

It’s simple. We’ve heard from John Souttar about judging the team at the end of the season, we’ve heard from James Tavernier after the Scottish Cup exit to Celtic, and Danny Rohl has detailed the dressing room promise to fully embrace the final nine fixtures of the season.

Rangers need to seize the initiative and send a message

Rangers destiny won’t be fully determined, based on what happens at St. Mirren Park next weekend, but the opening stages will tell us all we need to know.

If we see a fired-up team, coming out of the blocks like against Celtic in the recent 2-2 draw, or in parts during the Scottish Cup exit, we could be on to something.

If that dressing room promise means anything, they will seize the initiative and send a message.

They will show the required fire and fight to win the first of the four remaining games before the split.

If this Rangers team isn’t to completely implode and suffer another premature end to a season, they need to come flying out of the traps against St. Mirren.

Conversely, if it’s a repeat of what was witnessed in West Lothian against Livingston, we can all forget it.

Yes, winning the game is all that matters now, but it can’t be another salvage job, rushing in the second half to get things done, or worse, to recover from a deficit.

It may only be Monday, but soon enough, the focus will turn to matters on the pitch again.

Rangers need to do some talking on the pitch, backed up with actions, rather than telling the fans what they want to hear.
