Steven Gerrard Rangers return speculation debunked

It’s been a terrible couple of weeks for Danny Rohl as his Rangers side looks set to miss out on silverware this season.

Recent draws against Motherwell, Livingston, and Celtic have hampered their league title ambitions considerably.

The Gers are currently six points behind Hearts in first and a point behind Celtic, who occupy second.

Rohl’s men were knocked out of the Scottish Cup quarter-final by their arch-rivals, sparking a new fierce debate.

Is Rohl the man to continue taking Rangers forward or should another coach come in?

In the last couple of days, Steven Gerrard’s name has resurfaced, with another potential return floated.

STV Radio Football Show host, Ewen Cameron, said “I would also suggest that he (Rohl) will not be the manager in the summer, and I think that either Steven Gerrard or Frank Lampard will be in the hot seat at Ibrox.”

Gerrard’s first spell at Ibrox

Steven Gerrard inherited a struggling Rangers team in 2018, which had finished 17 points off Celtic before he took over.

The footballing icon rebuilt the team to compete domestically and in Europe, commanding hard work and respect.

During the 2020-21 season, Gerrard led Rangers to a record-breaking season.

He claimed back-to-back Old Firm wins and topped their Europa League group.

That year, they won the Premiership without losing a single game, picking up 102 points and only conceding 13 goals in 38 games.

Gerrard already knows the club and knows what the fans demand every week.

The Englishman wouldn’t have to rebuild like he did before, with many of the current crop talented enough to win silverware.

Most importantly, he knows how to win the Premiership title and to do it in a dominating fashion.

Before was Rohl was appointed after the sacking of Russell Martin, Gerrard held talks with Andrew Cavenagh and Paraag Marathe of 49ers Enterprises.

However, he walked away after several discussions.

Gerrard return no more than speculation

Though results have been sub-par in recent weeks, there is no question Danny Rohl has the capability to manage Rangers.

The German did a fantastic job at Sheffield Wednesday and needs time just like Steven Gerrard got.

Rohl has only lost one game in the Premiership this season and has made the team much more defensively solid.

He’s taken the team from mid-table to still be in touching distance of the title with nine games left to play.

Rohl likes to be aggressive and sets up his team in a high press, with some players in the squad failing to fit to his style.

Russell Martin was backed with over £40 million worth of new signings last summer, and Rohl has done enough to warrant a summer of bringing in his own players.

If things don’t improve then, maybe it’s time to move on.

Until that happens, Rohl should be backed by the board.

What do you think? Should Rangers go back to Gerrard or should the board stick with Rohl?
