- Steven Gerrard opens up on time with James Tavernier
- New transfer links have surfaced for the departing fullback
- Ally McCoist slams Celtic for planned Old Firm lockout
Steven Gerrard spoke to Chris Jack of the Rangers Review to discuss all things James Tavernier.
The former Gers boss spoke on his legacy at Ibrox to why he made him captain in 2018.
Gerrard said, “The service he’s given Rangers, the service he’s given Scottish football, I think he deserves to go on his terms this time.”
“The loyalty to stick with Rangers, through thick and thin, there’s probably been many a time where he’s had the chance to jump out of the heat.”
“But what he’s done is he’s stayed there and fought for the fans for 11 years.”
On his captaincy choice, Gerrard said, “But I think a big part of the decision with James is, can I get the right people around him who can help him become a better leader?”
“That was the key to James. I don’t think he was a natural captain, but I felt with the right people around him, the right guidance, and the right support from myself, he would have done a sterling job.”
“Can we get captains around the team and let James thrive from that full-back position? He certainly did.”

Fresh Tavernier transfer links
Tavernier was linked with a shocking move to Tottenham Hotspur if they are to be relegated from the Premier League.
Today, already relegated Wolverhampton Wanderers are looking at bringing in the experienced right back.
Wolves obviously want players at a minimum cost, who will help them return to the Premier League immediately.
With 144 goals for Rangers and plenty of offensive quality, Tavernier fits the bill.
However, Tavernier’s 30k a week wages may leave Rob Edwards considering if he’s the right option at Molineux.
Greek side Panathinaikos is one of the leaders to gain his signature.
While clubs from Saudi Arabia and Turkey are also keen.
The MLS is also a place Tavernier has been linked with, but he may prefer more stiff competition.

Ally McCoist hits out at a disgraceful Celtic ban.
Rangers legend Ally McCoist has slammed Celtic’s plans to block out Rangers supporters for the final Old Firm of the season.
Celtic have chosen not to sell tickets for the away allocation, so members of the Union Bears cannot go in.
It’s the biggest Old Firm of the season with title implications, and Celtic are deciding to make it only home fans.
McCoist said, “Rangers have asked the SPFL to step in after Celtic refused to give away fans any tickets for the final Old Firm derby of the season unless the Ibrox club’s Union Bears ultras group is banned.”
On a sarcastic note, he added, “I think Celtic are absolutely correct in this.”
“I think they should actually tell Rangers the names of the fans they’d like to invite to the game.”
“Would Celtic rather do that, and say we want so-and-so and so-and-so, I mean, it’s just embarrassing?”
McCoist continued to label the situation a “disgrace” and a “shambles.”
